Flying into the San Francisco Bay Area for RIMS 2022?

We’re here to help. Here is a complete guide on transportation options from the largest airports in the area to the conference location, Moscone Center.

Our Top Recommendations:
Traveling from San Francisco International Airport or Oakland Airport

If you are worried about traffic, which is always a factor in big cities, we suggest using BART. BART is the easiest form of transportation from both SFO and the Oakland Airport. However, if you prefer your own privacy, Uber is always a great option.

What’s BART?

BART is The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART). BART is very similar to New York’s Subway. It is a public transportation system that connects communities all across the SF Bay Area. It is preferred by many commuters who like to get into and out of the city without having to deal with nasty rush hour traffic.

Traveling from San Jose Airport

If you happen to be flying into the San Jose Airport, the fastest way to get into the city would be to Uber but that comes with a price. Using Caltrain would be the cheapest option to make it into San Francisco but is very inconvenient.

Want more? Here's a Deep Dive into all the options:

SFO to Moscone Center

Public transportation

  • Our Top Pick: BART (Trip Planner)
    • The SFO BART station is located in the International Terminal of the Airport
    • The closest BART stop to Moscone Center is Powell St; about an 8 minute walk
    • Mask Required
    • Cost: $7-9 (depending on time and date)
    • Total travel time: about 40 minutes

Why is this our top pick? BART picks you up right at the airport terminal and drops you off a few blocks from Moscone Center. Plus, you won’t have to worry about sitting in city traffic. BART is preferred over Caltrain because its stops are more convenient for traveling to Moscone Center:

What’s Caltrain?

Caltrain is a commuter rail service that has dozens of stations located between Gilroy and San Francisco. The train is fully equipped with seating, bike storage, and even bathrooms. Caltrain is a favorite among commuters due to its efficiency and its final stop that leads right up to the SF Giants’ stadium, Oracle Park.

While Caltrain is convenient for many commuters, we do not recommend using it to travel to the Moscone Center:

    • The closest Caltrain station to SFO is the Millbrae Station, 5 mins away by car.
    • The closest Caltrain station to Moscone Center Caltrain Station is 4th and King St, a 20-minute walk
    • Mask Required
    • Cost: $6
    • Total travel time from Millbrae Station: about 25 minutes on the train, plus a 20-minute walk

Ridesharing/Taxi

  • Uber or Lyft
    • Moscone Center Address - 747 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103
    • Cost: $30 - 50, depending on day and time
    • Total travel time: about 25 minutes
  • Taxi
    • The designated taxi zone is located at the roadway center island on the Arrivals/Baggage claim levels of all terminals
    • Cost: $40-60 depending on the time of day and Taxi service
    • Total travel time: about 25 minutes

Oakland Airport to Moscone Center

Public transportation

  • Our Top Pick: BART (Trip planner)
    • Oakland Airport Bart Station is located across from Terminal 1 baggage claim
    • The closest BART stop to Moscone Center is Montgomery St. (8-minute walk)
    • Mask Required
    • Cost: $8-11 (depending on time and date)
    • Total travel time: About 50 minutes

Why is this our top pick? Much like SFO, the BART station is connected to the Oakland airport and drops you off within blocks of Moscone Center. It is also the cheapest and most efficient option when traveling into the city from Oakland.

Ridesharing/Taxi

  • Uber
    • Moscone Center Address - 747 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103
    • Cost: $90-120, depending on day and time
    • Total travel time: about 30 minutes
  • Taxi
    • Friendly Cab: (510) 536-3000
    • Veteran’s Cab: (510) 533-1900
    • There are two taxi companies authorized to provide service at Oakland Airport
    • The designated Taxi Zones are curbside of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
    • Cost: $60-80 depending on the time of day and Taxi service
    • Total travel time: about 30 minutes

San Jose Airport to Moscone Center

Public transportation

  • Caltrain (Not Recommended)
    • The closest Caltrain Station to San Jose Airport is Santa Clara Station
      • Take the VTA bus route no.60 from San Jose Airport to be dropped off at the Santa Clara Caltrain station
    • The closest Caltrain station to Moscone Center Caltrain Station is 4th and King St
    • Caltrain Map
    • Mask Required
    • Cost: $10.50
    • Total travel time: about 1 ½ hours, time gets shortened if you take bullet train + 20-minute walk to Moscone Center

Ridesharing/ Taxi

  • Our Top Pick: Uber
    • Moscone Center Address - 747 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103
    • Cost: $90 - 120, depending on day and time
    • Total travel time: about 1 hour

Why is this our top pick? While this is one of the pricier choices, taking an Uber is the most direct option to take into San Francisco. Similar to SFO, the Santa Clara Caltrain station is not at the airport terminal and requires a long walk to Moscone Center once you’ve arrived at the nearest stop.

  • Taxi
    • Taxi stands are located at Terminal A, Stop 2 and Terminal B, Stop 1.
    • Cost: $140 - 160 depending on the time of day and Taxi service
    • Total travel time: about 1 hour
