This week, we chat with Alexandra Glickman, Senior Managing Director-Global Practice Leader in Real Estate & Hospitality at Gallagher, where she also serves as Area Vice Chairman.

1. What is the most interesting idea you’ve encountered in your world lately?

It has been interesting to see that science is breaking through again, and to see that truth prevails over lies.

2. Where do you think no one is looking right now?

We are too frenzied and in the moment. We need to be guided more by our history and to be reminded of our humanity as we chart our way forward.

3. If you had a magic wand, what would you change about your industry?

I would use my magic wand to change the racism, sexism, and homophobia that is endemic in our industry. Too many people pay lip service to diversity, yet there is a group-think mentality. Having more women, people of color, those from the LGBTQ community in leadership roles will not only give our industry greater resilience but greater innovation and capabilities.

4. What’s the most rewarding part of what you do?

To empower and develop young, smart, engaged colleagues and give them opportunities to learn and grow.

5. What do you envision the next 12 months will bring?

The next 12 months will bring back a sense of optimism. Now that we see there are a few important things that need to be solved, and we will get on and solve them.

6. What’s your favorite building?

The Ritz in London, because the Lalique glass in the Rivoli Bar is both romantic and ethereal.

7. Please dispel a myth or misconception about your work.

That our industry is simple and that the business can be learned quickly. This is an apprenticeship business. All the algorithms in the world cannot disrupt the human relationships that are needed to accomplish what is necessary.

8. What are the tools, apps, or gadgets that you just can’t live without?

Besides my iPad and iPhone, I can’t live without my Yoshikin Japanese knife set. My salvation and therapy are cooking.

9. What’s your biggest pleasant surprise related to remote work?

Being able to be around the people I love the most. I have also enjoyed not having to get on an airplane.

10. What’s your favorite productivity tip for staying motivated and getting work done?

I like to rise early and walk for at least a couple of miles first thing in the morning to clear my head. I also have conversations with friends and level set with my team for the day.

11. What or who do you read to keep informed?

12. Nominate someone who should answer this next.

I nominate Inga Beale, Independent Non-Executive Director at Crawford & Company and Former CEO at Lloyd’s, for her fascinating perspective.

I also nominate Sanjay Godhwani, the Executive Vice President at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance, and Michael Chang, Co-Leader of Global Insurance at Sompo International and CEO at Sompo Global Risk Solutions, who are both leaders in the US commercial property insurance market.

Thank you to Hemant Shah, Co-Founder and CEO of Archipelago for inviting Alexandra to answer 12 Questions.
